Workday unveils Agent Passport, AWS tie-up in Q2 results

Workday reports fiscal Q2 results, says AI now drives much new business, and launches an AWS integration plus Agent Passport for enterprise HR AI agents.

2 September 2026

Workday reported fiscal second-quarter results and used the earnings moment to announce a strategic integration with Amazon Web Services and a suite of new agent-focused HR products, including a capability it calls Agent Passport.

On Aug. 27, Workday said AI now drives a significant portion of its new bookings and outlined a partnership with AWS that will provide bi-directional access between Workday Data Cloud and AWS AI services. The company also introduced Developer Agent, Agent Passport — positioned as a testing and verification mechanism for enterprise HR agents — and a collection of agentic features aimed at recruiting, talent management and people-data workflows.

Workday positions the AWS integration as a way for customers to connect people data held in Workday Data Cloud with AWS-hosted models and services, enabling model calls that can reference Workday data while keeping the data flow controllable from the enterprise side. The vendor says Developer Agent is intended to help organisations build and customise conversational or task-oriented agents that operate on HR workflows, while Agent Passport is designed to validate an agent’s behaviour and safety before it is deployed inside a customer environment.

Taken together, the announcements mark one of the clearest product-and-partner moves yet from a major HR system vendor to push agentic and generative AI deeper into core HR processes. By coupling product features aimed at authoring and certifying agents with a cloud-provider connection for model execution, Workday is signalling a faster path from pilot projects to production deployments in areas such as candidate screening, onboarding automation and population-level talent analytics.

The move reflects a wider trend across the talent-technology market in which vendors are embedding generative models and autonomous agents into recruiting and HR operations. Employers and HR leaders have been increasingly interested in the efficiency and scale such tools promise, but that surge in adoption has come alongside intensified questions about governance, bias, data protection and auditability — concerns that regulators and privacy advocates have flagged repeatedly in recent months.

Workday’s announcement includes product positioning and architectural detail, but stops short of several operational and compliance specifics that HR buyers will want. The company has not disclosed whether Agent Passport will produce independent certification reports, how agent testing will handle protected class data or demographic fairness metrics, or whether the AWS integration will support enterprise customers' preferred approaches to model selection, logging and retention for audit trails. Pricing and early-customer commitments for Developer Agent and Agent Passport were not detailed.

That absence of detail matters because enterprises will need to reconcile faster rollout cycles with obligations under employment law, privacy rules and internal governance policies. HR teams deploying automated screening or decision-support agents must be able to demonstrate both the technical controls — such as logging, explainability and roll-back procedures — and the business processes for human oversight and candidate appeal.

Workday’s product and partner moves are likely to accelerate the shift of generative AI from experimental pilots into day-to-day HR operations, but they also raise sharper expectations for vendors and customers to put governance, auditability and privacy controls front and centre. For HR leaders, the immediate task will be translating these new capabilities into accountable processes: adopting Agent Passport and similar tools will demand clear evidence of what was tested, who reviewed results, and how people-impacted decisions can be audited after deployment.
